At Universal Polymer & Rubber, we specialize in the manufacture of molded, extruded, and die-cut polymer parts and products. Our manufactured components find application in a variety of markets.
One of the key markets we serve is the pipe and piping market. We provide engineered pipe gaskets for a wide range of water management applications, including those involving concrete piping.
What Are Concrete Pipe Gaskets?
Concrete pipe gaskets are elastomeric components used to create tight seals within the joints of concrete piping systems. They prevent soil and other contaminants from entering the system and water and other vital process fluids from escaping the system.
Depending on the design of the pipe, one of the following gasket styles is specified:
- Profiled gaskets are designed to fill the annular space in the joint and seal the joint properly.
- O-ring gaskets are dictated by concrete pipe design.
- Mastic sealant gaskets are made from bituminous or butyl rubber. Unlike other rubber gaskets, they do not rebound when the pipe moves.
- Pre-lube gaskets can save time with field installation. This allows for a trade off between up-front expense and less expensive installation.
They come in many materials to suit various application requirements and restrictions. For example, extruded gaskets come in four standard materials: polyisoprene or EPDM (for drainage applications), neoprene (for oil or chemical applications), and nitrile (for oil applications). Choosing the right gasket type and material helps ensure the formation of a watertight seal that can withstand exposure to the contaminants found in the underground environment.
What Types of Joints Are Found in Concrete Pipes?
Pipe joints can be made in a number of ways. The ones commonly found in concrete pipe systems are:
- Tongue and Groove Joints: These joints require the use of pipes with matching pipe ends. The void between the two ends is typically filled with mastic joint compound or mortar to ensure a tight assembly.
- Single Offset Joints: These joints have an offset on the spigot or bell that accommodates a rubber gasket.
- Confined O-Ring Joints: These joints have a groove on the spigot or bell that accommodates a rubber gasket.
Concrete Pipe Gasket Installation
The laying and jointing of concrete pipes should occur with a great deal of precision to ensure a robust and leak-free joint is achieved.
It’s important to work with a knowledgeable contractor during each stage of the process to ensure the pipe and sealing components are installed properly according to industry and regulatory specifications and standards.
Concrete Pipe Gaskets From Universal Polymer & Rubber
In 2020, the US House of Representatives passed a $1.5 trillion infrastructure bill. While the bill ultimately failed to be signed into law, it is an indication that people still see the value in investing in infrastructure products, such as a concrete piping system for water management.
Looking for durable and reliable gaskets for your concrete piping project? Universal Polymer & Rubber has you covered. We manufacture pipe gaskets engineered to prevent infiltration and exfiltration in pipe systems.
