June is National Safety Month. Taking a look at the numbers, compared to 2015 there has been an almost 8 percent increase in total fatal injuries per year as of 2016, which saw 5,190 deaths. That same year also saw 849 falls, slips or trips, which was up by 49 incidents from 2015. Observed annually, National Safety Month focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work.

June serves as a time to raise awareness about important safety issues to ultimately help reduce preventable injuries and deaths. Each week in June this year, the National Safety Council will focus on a different safety topic.

National Safety Month Weekly Topics

The safety topics of the month are broken out as follows:

Week 1: Emergency Preparedness. This week will have a focus on being prepared for accidents and emergencies, including tornado prep plans and employee training on First Aid and CPR.

Week 2: Wellness. This week focuses on 360-wellness of employees, including anyone affected by the opioid crisis or by sleep disorders.

Week 3: Falls. The third week will shine a light on how to prevent falls in the workplace. It will touch on topics like cleaning up spills and hazards immediately and how these behaviors can help reduce the yearly incident count.

Week 4: Driving. The final week of National Safety Month talks about driving and related hazards, especially for those who drive for a living. After all, seat belts saved almost 15,000 lives in 2016. It addresses tips like avoiding cell phone use and making sure to get enough rest to prevent drowsy driving.

Every year, hundreds of workers are killed or injured at work – everything from a minor fall to major, fatal accidents cost American businesses and manufacturers thousands of man-hours. While industry is constantly working to improve safety measures and habits to protect its employees, sometimes we need an event to help focus even further.

National Safety Month

While safety is a year-round endeavor, every June, the National Safety Council puts together the National Safety Month. This is an opportunity to draw attention to safety issues in the work place, at home, in the community, and on the roadways. Through supplying downloadable resources and other promotional materials, the council makes it easy to get in touch with the work force and promote safety. Areas covered include:

  • First Aid Training
  • Workplace Safety
  • Compliance Training
  • Driver Safety
  • Fleet and Specialty Vehicle Training

Safety Year-Round

While National Safety Month is a major focal point, the National Safety Council provides information, pamphlets and posters for the work place, and much more all year. Even if it isn’t National Safety Month, it can still be a good month for you to go over safety with your employees and co-workers. Work with your company, employees, and co-workers to identify areas where your company may need to improve, and develop and implement training and response. The National Safety Council is a great source for books and reference materials for your company’s safety improvements.

Here at Universal Polymer, we will be using National Safety Month to help ensure that our employees are cognizant of the dangers that can be found in the workplace, and how to avoid injury or worse.  For our customers, we help them keep a safe working environment by offering Goldline ® and Silverline ® tarp straps for the trucking industry.  These straps are durable, strong, and have a resistance to weathering, making them the best option for keeping tarps strapped down.   Contact us here to learn more information about our tarp straps and our safety philosophies.

Safety is a subjective topic. Most of us pay heed to sensationalized stories of plane crashes, terrorist attacks and inclement weather and form precepts of security accordingly.

It is not recommended that we indulge in jay-walking or inebriated driving. These are accepted cautions that are firmly entrenched in our minds because of repetition and the warnings of our parents and authority figures.

But there are a myriad ways in which we put ourselves in jeopardy that aren’t widely discussed and thus stay in the shadowy background rearing their heads from time to time and claiming lives. This is particularly true for the workplace. Imagine a construction worker roaming the site without his hard top hat! It seems like a minor oversight and can’t even be deemed catastrophic in normal settings. After all wearing a hat is optional. It doesn’t define our life and our safety.

But near a building that requires steel bars, rods, cement vats and brick loads and the manipulation of these items at considerable heights to set up, a single falling object may be the difference between life and death. In short the rules of the game change depending upon the ecosystem in which an individual operates.

The National Safety Month is an annual event that is a drive for awareness. It strives to dedicate a full 30 days to the various practices we can participate in to ensure our security given the special circumstances we work and live in. And this June it was the poignant #ilivefor that dominated the social media sphere.

SAFETY MONTH JUNE 2015

Why is the safety month special?

Well it actively tries to ‘engage’ the audience with its literature. There are no tedious PDFs to go through. The gist of safety endeavors is presented in appealing formats like checklists, tip sheets, videos and infographics. Professionally created bite-sized material that can boost both interest and retention.

June 2015 saw a dash of emotional charge to the proceedings as the main theme of the drive was ‘What I Live For’. All the content was geared towards reminding people (especially workers in hazard-prone settings) that they needed to take their personal and even community safety seriously to live a full life and be witness to milestone events they have been waiting for. It beckoned individuals to understand the fact that their well-being is tantamount to the well-being of their family members. The free downloads covered drug abuse, slips, falls, transportation safety and ergonomics.
